For my second blog ill be looking into The Wandering Earth as I was absent for week 3.
The Wandering Earth is a SciFi movie which explores the idea of moving earth through space into a new solar system to save it from ecological disaster. Wathicng this movie was an interesting mix of different cultures and ideals held by the heros. A large dipiction of this is the way the main protagnoists interact with eachother and how they intereact with thier society. Some of the most important issues that were addressed was things such as politics, International cooperation and capatilism. From a personal perspective a lot of the movie focued upon the meaning of family, culture and personal struggles. This was highilighted a lot through the film with the death of the grandfather and teh interactions with the addoptive sister.
This movie was directed by Frant Gwo. Born in 1980 in China it was the start of the one child policy. The rationale for implementing the policy was to reduce the growth rate of China’s enormous population. This was only recently abolished by the government in 2015 but it is and intersting relation that the single child policy might have effected the way that the wandering earth was shot especially in the regards to family.
Another intersting point of the wandering earth is the idea of the international community. This movie was the second highest grossing film that was made in china. We see many different cultures depicted in the world but a lot of it focus upon Chinese citizens and how their actions have saved the earth. In comparison to western films where its usually the USA who save the world the wandering earth has the final few minutes of the movie showing men from all diferent cultures working together to fix one of the jet propultion engines of earth. This highlightts the unity of the world and how it would effect the progress of the world. Though we follow maily chinese citizens its an interesting take to see that the resilution and solution is one that needed all cultures.
All in all the Wandering earth for me personally is an interesting mix of many different topics seemlessly explored in a short time. When applying autoethnographic methodology to this text its also interesting to see how the life of the director has effected and framed different issues in a new light. If applying my own experinece in this film it would frame a lot of the central issues in anew light with different emphasis, stories and relationships.
